SHADOW THE ZEDONK
Shadow is a hybrid of zebra and donkey bred at Colchester Zoo and currently around 30 years old. He shares a large enclosure with, among other African herbivores, several Damara zebras. While the zebras form family groups and approach the perimeter fence, the zedonk generally remains solitary and at a distance.
Although the zoo refer to it as the first recorded zedonk this is incorrect. Such hybrids have been recorded by Darwin in the 19th Century and by Hammerton in the 1930s. Read all about zedonks and other zebra, horse and donkey hybrids.
